How to choose warehousing, distribution and 3PL services

Using a 3PL provider will help you to quickly build a multi-location distribution network with lower risk, without the significant capital investment associated with building out a network on your own. When choosing a 3PL company it is imperative to choose a 3PL with a convenient location, great QA controls, a secure warehouse, and one that offers e-commerce fulfillment, as well as inventory and shipment tracking.

Here are some important questions to ask:

What type of facility do you need for your products?

Is the facility cGMP compliant?  Is it FDA approved?

Is the facility recognized and certified as a Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributers (VAWD) facility for shipping pharmaceutical products?

Does the facility have an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification for shipping products to large retail chains like Wal-Mart and Target?

Is it temperature and humidity controlled and monitored?

Can the facility handle storage of food products?

Can it handle storage of medical devices?

Does the facility have adequate space required for your products?

Can it handle controlled substances and has it been approved by the DEA?

Has the facility ever received a 483 / warning letters from the FDA?

Can the facility give you real time inventory reports via a company portal?

Can it handle the volume of work you require?

How secure will your products be at the facility?

Does the facility have appropriate procedures in place and a sprinkler system in case of a fire or natural disaster?

All of these are crucial topics of discussion and should be part of your due diligence and can save thousands of dollars in your supply chain. A 3PL that understands that it is not just their reputation on the line but also yours when handling your products is key.
